My kids fight a lot. And by a lot I mean every waking moment. OK, maybe not EVERY waking moment but it sure does seem like it some days. They're just going through this stage where they can't leave each other alone and that causes constant conflict. I feel like I spent my entire day yelling, correcting, telling them to keep their hands to themselves, stop fighting, threatening to go home, and so on. It's exhausting.
I've just accepted that this is a stage they're in and I'm going to have to ride it out. There will be peace, love and happiness at some point, I'm sure. As siblings go, they're pretty typical. They love each other to death, but at only 18 months apart, often want to play with the exact same toy at the exact same time (and I by often I mean always) and that causes conflict. (On a side note, maybe if I just threw away all the toys the problem would be solved…hmmm)
Yesterday was a totally different kind of day, though. We went to Idlewild and Soak Zone, just me and the boys, for a special preview of the new Hanneford Circus they're having this summer. After the circus we were invited to stay at the park for the rest of the day, so we decided to take advantage and ride some rides.
I'm not sure who stole my fighters and replaced them with perfect children but I'd like to thank that person. We left our house at 8 a.m. and returned at 7 p.m. We saw the circus, rode a lot of rides, ate lunch, played in Jumpin Jungle, rode some more rides, had snacks, played one game (but just one), played in the waterpark and headed home. Once we arrived home we took a walk to a neighbor's house and played for an hour and then came home for jammies and books.
Through the entire 12 hours there was not ONE argument. Not one whine. Not one tantrum. The boys got along like best friends. They rode every ride together, buckled each other in and helped each other out. They never argued over which ride to ride next or who would sit where. They ate lunch without protest. They played just one game and didn't spend an hour begging for more. And even after an extrememly long, tiring day with no naps, they played with the neighbors, shared and took turns. Idlewild is one of our most favorite places on earth (it really is the best kid's amusement park ever, in my opinion), but what on earth caused this? Do they pump something into the air like casinos do?
It was absolutely incredible.
I wish every day could be like yesterday. I wish I could figure out how it happened, I thought maybe the stars just aligned right, maybe it was because we were at Idlewild, maybe they're out of the fighting stage. Whatever it was I'd like to respectfully request it again. All the time. Thank you.
Of course, this morning I was awoken to them fighting over whether our recliner was a couch or a chair. COUCH! CHAIR!! COUCH!! CHAIR!! COUCH! CHAIR! MOM!!! HE HIT ME!! MOM! HE'S BEING NAUGHTY! MOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMM!!!
I guess I can cross "Maybe they're out of the fighting stage" off my list.
Maybe we should go back to Idlewild today to test that theory
