Something amazing has happened in our world. Ben turned three. You know what that means? Probably the single most important part of turning three in Pittsburgh?… That means he's old enough to go spend time in grocery jail/mom's heaven that we all know as the Eagle's Nest.
Matthew has been old enough for a while, but refused to be separated from his brother and parents and instead the two of them would conspire (I have visions of them plotting their grocery store terror attack in the wee hours of the night after we go to bed) to make our grocery shopping nothing short of a living hell.
Previously our grocery shopping went like this…
1. Kids find the "car cart" and are so excited to ride in it, steer the wheel, beep the horn (although it was imperative that we found one with both working wheels, not one with one wheel missing or fights would surely ensue)
2. Kids enjoy cart through the apples of the produce section, by the bananas they are out of the cart
3. Kids continue to torture us by asking for every single little thing, throwing things in the cart that we didn't see (how on earth did I end up with four boxes of fruit roll ups?), chasing each other, running into other people, etc. etc.
4. Mike and I separate to get shopping done faster.
5. I grab too many items (because I've left the cart with Mike) and drop an entire bottle of spaghetti sauce on the floor of Giant Eagle, causing glass and red sauce to fly all over the store. Yes, that was me.
6. We end up telling the kids they just lost their chance to get a movie from the RedBox. Crying starts.
7. Check out with two screaming kids, stained pant legs, four boxes of fruit roll ups and very much needing a drink.
But now? Now! Now they can go to the Eagles Nest!!
We talked them into it (after much cajoling) on Sunday and oh my word! What a pleasant shopping experience! Aside from listening intently for the "Parent number 8 please return to the Eagle's Nest" announcement (which never came) it was glorious. 25 minutes of pure grocery store heaven (we hurried so their first experience would be a good one and they would want to go back). I actually looked at the yogurt flavors before tossing them into my cart, can you even imagine!?
When I picked them up the attendant suggested next time we use the whole two hours (two hours!) and get a coffee, have a "cafe date".
I think I love that woman. Can I grocery shop every day?
Hooray for the Eagle's Nest!
