Eight years ago today was my wedding day. I woke up, went for a run, and began the best day of my life. The weather was much like it is today, sunny and breezy, only a bit warmer. We had friends and family from childhood, college and our adults lives there to celebrate our union. It was the only time we had that many people on both sides together. It was such a fun day and a great party.
The funniest story of the night was that we ran out of beer. I was horrified. Our reception location was the type that let you bring in your own alcohol. I argued with the beer store guy that we'd need a lot of beer, but he said he knew the right amount and sure enough, around 9 p.m. we ran out of beer. Right before my bridezilla tantrum that was about to explode from my head, one of our groomsmen turned to us and said (very drunkenly) "That's ok, we're all drinking WHISKEY!" When the whiskey ran out, they switched to vodka, and so on. We had rented a shuttle bus to go back and forth from the reception to to the hotel, so nobody was driving and that turned out to be the best thing we could have ever done. Everyone was free to just relax adn enjoy…and they did. It was a very, very fun night. One I'll never forget. It was the
beginning of our life together.
The highlight of the night was finding out where we were going on our honeymoon. You see, it was a gift from my parents and the location was a surprise (they had done the same thing for my brother when he got married 7 years prior). At most weddings, a good number of guests leave after the cake is cut, but almost nobody left ours because they all wanted to see where we'd end up going. My mother had randomly passed out numbered envelopes several guests and we were called up to the dance floor to draw numbers out of hat. When a number was called the guest holding that envelope had to come up to the stage and open their envelope. Each one contained a rhyme. For example, one said "Paris is nice, but the language difference made us think twice…you're not going to Paris".
After several envelopes a number was called and nobody got up. As we all sat there puzzled, we suddenly noticed the music change to some Hawaiian music and out from the back of the room came my college friend Pam, dressed in a bikini top and grass skirt. She danced her way through the room, putting leis on the mens' necks and eventually made her way to the dance floor where she placed leis and grass skirts on each of us and handed us tickets to Hawaii. It was such fun.
As I look back on that day and the eight years since I couldn't be happier. My life has really turned out to be more than I could have ever hoped for. Every single moment hasn't always been happy – through the two years of a very emotional battle with infertility, we stuck together and supported each other, and were blessed with two amazing children. And last summer when we lost both of Mike's parents in two months we shed a lot of tears and held each other tight. We've changed houses, cars, gained weight, lost weight, had two kids, lost two parents, and spent a awful lot of time reviewing local playplaces
Through it all we've laughed, we've cried and we've done it as a team.
Marriage is certainly not easy. I remember last year thinking that we were beginning the "Seven Year Itch" stage of our marriage. According to the National
Center for Health Statistics , the average marriage lasts just over
7 years. 7.2 to be exact. I'm thrilled to have faced that seven-year-itch head on and lived to talk about it.
I may be "PittsburghMom' but I could have never gotten here without first being Mrs. Fiedler.
Happy Anniversary to us. Here's to another 8.
So tell me, how long have you been married?
What's your favorite wedding day?
