The weather was looking a little gray yesterday morning so I thought I'd take the kids to a movie. I'd been wanting to see "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" and was pleased to learn it came out yesterday. So we packed up our bag and headed to the mall. I never know how Ben will be, he is a little young for movies and generally does not make it though the entire show. Luckily he had woken up early and fell asleep on my lap precisely when the movie started and woke up as the credits were rolling. It was kismet.
Based loosely on the 1978 book by Judi Barrett, the movie is directed by Phil Loord and voiced by some big names (Anna Faris, James Caan, Mr. T, Al Roker and Neil Patrick Harris, among others). The Mr. T character was my personal favorite… hilarious.
Matthew and I both really enjoyed the movie. It was rather predictable, which is my only real complaint. The characters included your typical misunderstood nerd trying to get people to like him, the annoying over-confident jock, the greedy smarmy mayor, a deceased mom who was perfect in every way and the dad that just doesn't know how to express his love. It reminded me a lot of Chicken Little. Oh, and there's a love story, of course.
The plot is fun, a scientist who has never invented anything worthwhile finally invents a machine that turns water into food. One accident later and the machine is up in the atmosphere using the water from the clouds and then raining food. Everyone gets fat and greedy and that's when things go wrong. The inventor, his awkward dad and his new love interest set out to save the world.
Matthew loved the silly humor and the various food items raining down. He was often very vocal and definitely in to the move, even standing to be closer to the screen during one nail biting scene. I enjoyed the story, as well, and really enjoyed all of the science talk and moral lessons (greed is bad, it's more important to stay true to yourself than to try and please other people, etc.). There were enough "grown up" jokes peppered in the plot to keep me snickering as well.
It doens't rank up there with Toy Story or Finding Nemo in my opinion, but I'd definitely go see it. It's not that often that a well-made kids movie comes and there are no red flags with this one, cute plot, cute humor, definitely worth a trip to the theater and a popcorn to share with your little buddy.
