Last night we dragged out the Legos and Matthew asked me to build him something. I froze like a deer in headlights. My building skills consist of "let's build a tower!!"
And it occured to me….I've got boys. I'm a mom to boys. But I'm a girl. A girly girl at that. This is proving to be a problem. I don't know anything about "boy stuff". Sure, I had a brother growing up and I"m not afraid of bugs, but that's about all I've got.
I've realized that the technical knowledge necessary to build a good Lego airplane or GeoTrax layout is somehow missing from my girl brain. It either was never there or I killed it with the chemicals in Easy Bake Oven brownies.
Either way, I'm screwed.
I can't effectively play with my kids because they want me to play things like war and baseball and even more, they want me to BUILD THEM STUFF.
The last time I tried to build a train layout I thought I'd done a fantastic job. It LOOKED pretty. But then the boys ran to get their father and he took one look and burst into fits of laughter that my pretty set would allow the train to go around the big circle exactly one time before it would veer off into the little circle and be stuck there, doing little tiny loops forever and ever.
And Daddy got to be the hero when the show-off-Engineer fixed my track and I went into the other room to bake a pie or something.
I need a class.
Stop laughing, I'm not kidding. I need a class. I need a "Mothering Boys 101" class where I learn all about bugs and dirt and Lego building.
Let me know if you find something. Until then I'll be in the kitchen baking a pie. With my Easy Bake Oven, of course.
